In his own words

George Harrison on George Harrison is a book that music journalist Ashley Khan launched in 2020, which contains insightful interviews with the musician about his social activism, among other subjects. He reveals how John Lennon helped him envisage Concert for Bangladesh for example, a gig filled with a galaxy of stars that played music to raise funds for the Asian country.

Credit where it’s due

If it’s Martin Scorsese who’s directing a documentary on Harrison, you know that it’s going to be fabulous stuff. The filmmaker released George Harrison: Living in a Material World in 2011, intimately portraying the musician’s spiritual side, and how Vedic philosophy had deeply influenced him. Scorsese also points out that while Paul McCartney and John Lennon hogged most of the limelight thanks to their pop-influenced tunes, Harrison was somewhat shortchanged because though his tunes weren’t as catchy as theirs, they had their own gravitas and complex nuances.

Reach for the heavens

There are some absolute gems from Harrison’s solo career, but possibly none more glittering than My sweet lord. It’s a rousing track where Harrison lays his heart bare about how keen he is to meet the lord — which, in his case, is Krishna — and how agonising the wait for that to happen is.

Feeling good

Blow away is a lesser-known song from Harrison’s solo stint, but the track has such a feel-good tune to it that it immediately lifts the spirits. The musician talks about how easy it is to pick up the pieces when the chips seem down — all you need is some love and warmth, that’s it.
