For kids craving to experience nature, Mumbai’s Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum has curated an engaging storytelling session with children’s author Katie Bagli

With physical activities coming to a halt, it’s nearly impossible for kids to venture outdoors, even to a park or public garden. But this does not mean that such engagement cannot be relayed digitally. The folks at Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum have curated a series of virtual storytelling sessions for kids. This Friday, along with children’s author Katie Bagli, they will be hosting a storytelling session called The Zoo At Home, for kids from the ages of nine to 15. “For these educational sessions, we try to weave in a narrative because it’s easier for children to remember things in the form of stories,” says assistant curator Ruta Waghmare Baptista.

The session will focus on critters and creatures that are around us, ones that we turn a blind eye to. It will also draw attention to the history behind Mumbai’s Byculla Zoo and its residents. “I’ll begin with talking about the zoo but we won’t dive much into the animals found there; instead, I’ll talk about the crow that comes to our window or the parakeet that squawks loudly outside,” says Bagli. She will also narrate poems and verses from her own book, The Zoo Around You, co-authored by Medha Rajadhyaksha. After the narration, she will guide the kids to write and recite a few verses of their own. “I feel sorry for the kids because this has become quite a long-drawn period where the kids haven’t been able to go outdoors. They enjoy sessions like this because their creativity comes pouring out,” she adds. So, for kids keen for some interactive fun through the summer, whilst exploring local flora and fauna in an engaging way, this session should not be one to miss.
