Volunteer with two NGOs on National Sports Day to facilitate a virtual quiz on sports and help their young beneficiaries

Be a sport

National Sports Day is celebrated on August 29, the birth anniversary of India’s hockey wizard Dhyan Chand. Seen here, Dhyan Chand with the ball, in a match against France at the 1936 Olympic semi-finals

Since 2015, NGO platform ConnectFor has been connecting volunteers with suitable NGOs and organising events for their beneficiaries. Even as the pandemic struck, the organisation found a way to keep activities going, through their virtual volunteering system. This Sunday, along with partner NGO Play and Shine Foundation, they are preparing to conduct another event; this time, it’s a sports quiz on the occasion of National Sports Day that falls on August 29, and are inviting volunteers to sign up for the cause. “This is to help the children understand the different kinds of sports played today. It will focus on categories like famous sports players, rules of several games and other important events in sporting history. The opportunity to facilitate this is open to anybody who wishes to volunteer and contribute their skills, as well as spend some time virtually with the young ones,” says Sneha Suryawanshi, associate at ConnectFor.

“What we suggest that volunteers do, is to make it personal and give the children insight into the topic. We recommend not going by the book; that way they’ll learn more about the children too. That’s how the kids like it as well,” says associate Sanaa Kherodawala.  Volunteers wishing to sign up must be above the age of 18 and proficient in Hindi and English, to be able to interact with the children better. “We prefer both languages since children would like the material to be explained in Hindi as well. People who have the urge and willingness to contribute to social causes, love children and are good at communication are welcome to volunteer for this,” adds Suryawanshi.
