Since we’re dressing up for a New Year’s Eve celebration, let’s steer towards a new and playful look instead of going classic. The keywords here are fun, sparkly, and as always, comfortable. The trick to the third criterion is to focus on the areas that we feel confident about. If you haven’t shopped yet, here’s a guide to putting a last-minute comfortable and sexy NYE outfit together for a great 31st night. And whatever you wear, step out loving every curve and skin texture.

Fashionable foot forward

We believe in making a statement with your shoes. Ditch the pencil heels for block heels with a platform front or thick detailed heels; they’ll feel comfortable while staying on your feet all night, too. Black leather boots — with or without heels — are great options, and if styled well, can pull a look together. Don’t forget juttis. Call us old-fashioned, but a bedazzled pair can amp up a look. And they are a lot more flattering than ballerina pumps.
Cuts and colours
We’re loving the range of colourful maxi dresses with cutout details, and playful mix-and-match ensembles. For dresses, wide necklines, backless designs and a slight slit at the bottom spell fun. Drop the black and go for an ombre palette with pinks, yellows and oranges. The deeper and sharper the colour, the better.
All that jazz
Accessorise with tonnes of chunky jewellery, thick shell loops, statement rings and multiple chains and bracelets. Wear a watch if you revel in a lavish look, or layer gold rings and bracelets for a fun ‘night-out’ look. Contemporary jewellery is all the rage this year with innovative designs for earrings and headgear. A mix of traditional and modern can also be styled together. The idea is to have fun with it.
Eyes
A red lip is iconic, but don’t underestimate a translucent glossy and slightly tinted lip. That dewy look has been highlighted this year, and with Mumbai’s pleasant temperature drop making our skin dry, a shiny, well-moisturised face will trump a matte look. For that glow, rely on a highlighter for the nose, chin and cheekbones. Wear a soft and subtle smokey eye with winged eyeliner. Don’t forget to smudge a bit of eyeliner on your lower lid. And carry your tinted lip gloss to the party with you for touch-ups. Accentuate your hair’s natural texture. If it’s curly, go with bold and defined curls, and if it’s wavy, opt for soft but voluminous waves.
Sari 2.0
An unusual recommendation, but play around with an old sari. Avoid cotton saris if you want to glam up your look. Don’t add the over-recommended belt, instead use a sheer top or bralette. Throw in pointed pumps or strappy square toe heels with gold bling.
Pant perfect
If you want to ditch dresses, try out loose-pleated formal pants or wide-legged trousers with a crochet long-sleeved crop top. This is NYE, so opt for a top with a bit of shine. Flair pants that end just below the calf or longer flair legs are quite flattering. But try out them out before buying to test the exact length.
