Saadat Hasan Manto

The words of Saadat Hasan Manto have caught the attention of many writers — both established and aspiring —  for generations. The Theatre Management Company is hosting the third edition of the Online Theatre Festival where the Urdu Mehfil will showcase the works of the brilliant writer.

The event will introduce the audience with a recital of one of his stories, Do Kaumein. “The idea of this festival emerged with the realisation that theatre is not as accessible to the general public. The Urdu Mehfil is particularly interesting as it introduces the great works of Manto to the masses,” shares Anuj Khandelwal, COO, Theatre Management Company.

The showcase will be presented by Mumbai group Katha Kathan, and the plot revolves around the love story between a Hindu boy and a Muslim girl. “The festival has been immensely successful despite it being only our third edition. The idea is to introduce the works of diverse artistes and writers to the people,” Khandelwal tells us.

Having written mainly in Urdu, Manto is known for his stories about the Partition as well as the bitter truths of society and the complexities of humankind. The recital of Do Kaumein will include its striking remarks and the audience can indulge in an interactive session to discuss the life and times of Manto.
