Most people have a deep emotional bond with their food, which is influenced by several factors including their life experiences as well as their cultural background. Through an hour-long free online workshop, counselling psychologist Revathi Menon, will encourage participants to introspect and understand themselves better by using food as a metaphor.

“As a foodie, I understand how deeply people bond with certain foods. In fact, many people often go to significant lengths just to relish items they are fond of. In addition to taste, our love for certain foods is often associated with our past experiences. For example, while one person may relate samosas to enjoyable conversations with college friends, another might relate the same food to a beloved family recipe,” Menon elaborates. In this session, she will ask participants to name foods they are fond of, and then delve deeper into the memories they associate with that item.

Additionally, Menon will share interesting stories about the origins of specific dishes. “Few people are aware that tea, for instance, was discovered by complete accident. According to a Chinese legend, the emperor Shen Nong requested boiling water while out on a hunt. A leaf from an overhanging wild tea tree fell into the pot. The emperor enjoyed drinking the tea-infused water and further researched the plant. What I want people to understand from this anecdote is that while we may berate ourselves for the smallest mistakes and errors, these very mistakes often open the doors to new and exciting innovations and possibilities,” she shares.
