How often do you get to watch independent cinema that seldom makes it to movie theatres? Or, if you love the horror genre, how about giving films made in Eastern Europe a try? The Hive Film Club, which ran for a year after it was started in 2014, has been revived recently, featuring two film screenings a week from across genres.

Still from The Kite Runner

"The idea is to not just screen movies but also raise awareness about the kind of films being made today in India and across the world as well as classic cinema," says Sharin Bhatti, co-founder of the cultural centre, The Hive. New strides are being made
in LGBT cinema in India, she says, and at the same time, there are iconic films that will always remain relevant. While last Sunday saw back-to-back screenings of three documentaries on black metal music, this week’s line-up includes Apollo 18, a 2011 American-Canadian science fiction horror film, based on the premise that the cancelled Apollo 18 mission actually landed on the moon in 1974 but never returned, leading to the US decision of never launching another expedition to the moon. The film is shot in found-footage style.

On Saturday, literature lovers can watch The Kite Runner. Directed by Marc Forster, the film is based on the 2003 novel by Khaled Hosseini, which is set against the backdrop of the Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan and the rise of Taliban.

"We may increase the frequency of the screenings and take them to other venues in the city," shares Bhatti about what’s in the pipeline.

On December 14, 9 pm (Apollo 18); December 16, 7 pm (The Kite Runner)
At The Cuckoo Club, Bandra West.
