The workshop will look at the intricacies of magnetic tapes

Cinema is regarded as a visual language. But much of the pre-Internet era documentation in the form of U-matic, beta, digi-beta tapes and video and audio cassettes needs to be either preserved, digitised or restored.

To tackle this subject, the Film Heritage Foundation (FHF) in collaboration with Max Mueller Bhavan Mumbai will be hosting a free workshop next week that will be conducted by German conservation expert Andreas Weisser. The two-day event will cover the history of audio-video technology, risk assessment, equipment care, storage requirements and external digitisation projects.

"It is our hope that the workshop will help professionals develop skills to conserve the vast audio visual heritage in India," said Björn Ketels, director, MMB Mumbai.

On February 28 and 29, 10 am to 5.30 pm
