Aaj Rang Hai

Inspired by the works of legendary Sufi musician, poet and scholar Amir Khusrau, the play Aaj Rang Hai has been conceptualised to break several moulds in theatre. It brings together Kathak, robust qawwalis and an exploration of Khusrau’s poetry, life and philosophy.

Written by Purva Naresh and Vijay Naresh, the play is a love story that plays out in an unusual neighbourhood. The plot revolves around Beni Bai of Madhya Pradesh, a baithak singer by profession, who uses her knowledge of Indian classical music history to counsel her neighbours. The story is a celebration of love with interesting mad-cap characters like the fool, an angry bua and an endearing lafanga. A lot of the play is made of the endearing banter between bua and Beni Bai.

Writer and choreographer Purva says, “I have tried to create an old world mohalla with real and loving characters, and music and poetry providing the apt dramatic setting. The play cuts back and forth through time . Stepping into Aaj Rang Hai is like stepping into a quaint world of poetry, music and heart touching performances,” she says. The cast comprises Trisha Patel, Sarika Singh, Imran Rashid and Hussain Dalal, to name a few. It has been directed by Gopal Datt and Purva, while the music has been composed by Vijay Naresh. “The play also celebrates the secular weave of Indian music and history, something that we firmly believe in and want to highlight. It’s a must in these times,” adds Naresh.
