Mumbai Guide: Sign up for a weekend walk at Sassoon Docks

What is the first thing that flashes before your eyes when you hear "Sassoon Docks"? A massive fish market? The recent artsy makeover? Or the briny stench of the ocean? Here's a group that promises to take you behind the scenes of what the docks have been known for, for decades. Media legal firm DraftCraft International, with its Sundays at Sassoon Docks: Mumbai's Jewish Connection heritage walks, is offering Mumbaikars a peek into the methodical functioning of the oldest and one of the largest fishing markets in Mumbai.

"The Sassoon Docks walk is part of a series initiated to brief journalists, politicians, lawyers and activists of the needs of a specific area. The walks have been open to the public since January 2018 and are held on weekends. They can be customised for specific groups on other days too," says Gajanan Khergamker, founder.

Conducted every Sunday morning, the walk will discuss the historical relevance of the iconic structure, which was built in 1875 by David Sassoon, a Baghdadi Jew who this city owes a great debt to. The walk will also weave in the dock's history with crime and Bollywood, and touch upon the lives and cultures of the Koli, Banjara and other resident communities, in addition to screening a documentary on the docks shot by Khergamker himself.

On February 11, 7 am to 10 am AT Sassoon Docks, Colaba.
