With the world growing ever smaller, classical renditions by Mozart, Bach or Wagner are almost as accessible as a Hindustani music concert in Mumbai. But learning from the maestros of western classical music in India still remains a rare opportunity.

With an aim to bring back her knowledge to her roots, Patricia Rozario, famous soprano and professor at The Royal College of Music (London), along with her husband and pianist Mark Troop, returns to India regularly for an all-round vocal course in western music called Giving Voice to India (GVI). Organised by the Giving Voice Society, the course, conducted thrice a year, focuses on offering training in the Bel Canto technique, which leads to a stronger and clearer voice, with its emphasis on the beauty of sound.

The third phase of this course is a five-day workshop starting today. Amateurs with some music experience can learn the vocal techniques and styles along with pronunciations in Italian, German, French and English languages required in western music. "The masterclass offers lots to learn from international-level faculty members, at a fraction of the cost one would pay in the West," says Edward Mendes, trustee at the GVS.

For those who wish to learn but don't have prior experience can register as observers for the repertoire sessions. Teachers of western classical music can also join in for a conversation with Rozario.
