Building an idea, brick by brick

1-Minute Read

Rahul Mehrotra

While the title for the book might suggest to the reader that it is a tribute to RMA Architects’ Mumbai portfolio, in reality, it is a celebration of 30 years of practice across India, and a salute to the firm’s vision under the guidance of its founder principal, eminent architect Rahul Mehrotra.

One might ask if this book would appeal to any reader, who might not necessarily be interested in architecture or have a background in the subject? It will resonate, because it lucidly deciphers (sans the jargon) how ideas for path-breaking projects (new and existent) across the country were conceptualised, and completed or preserved. Mumbai’s readers will be treated to fascinating insight into urban conservation projects of some of its most famous, diverse spaces, including Gallery Maskara, Swati Snacks and CSMVS (formerly Prince of Wales Museum). The design principles of some of these projects make for a remarkable chronicle of not just the philosophies adopted across time periods and regions, but also how preservation methodology has been sensitively applied to insure and ensure its longevity in a new India’s cityscape. From churches to mahals, and new-age campuses, the reader will be treated to behind-the-scenes access of architectural blueprints. Another key aspect is the assimilation of nature and local influences across projects that blend urban thought with rural appeal.

Working in Mumbai, Mehrotra elaborates, is a tribute to the metropolis, one that he terms a laboratory that inspired his practice across the country. If you are a cityphile, that reference should be reason enough to pick up this book.
