Mumbai is lined with numerous south Indian restaurants, from the humble hole-in-the-wall establishments to the high-end cafes. While popular ones like Hotel Ram Ashraya and Cafe Madras have charmed patrons for years, the city is home to many other establishments serving a wide variety of dishes. For those whose love of south Indian food knows no bounds, or those who are experimental with their food, here’s a list you can try ordering in from in the city.



Tamil tiffin

The Tanjore Tiffin Room is among the few restaurants in the city serving authentic Tamil food. The menu comprises of several home-style dishes from the kitchens of Chennai that will appease seafood lovers. Some of the most interesting dishes here include Prawns Madras Railway Curry (Rs 590), Chicken Chettinad (Rs 475), Mutton Homestyle Kolumbo (Rs 590), and Prawns Ghee Roast (Rs 590). Straight out of Kerala

A humble establishment that resembles a canteen, Hotel Deluxe is arguably the best place to relish some traditional food from Kerala. You can expect nothing but the most flavourful vegetarian curries, chicken stews, and seafood dishes. Among their specialities are Karimeen Fry (Rs 605), Karimeen Pollichathu (Rs 655), and Squid Fry (Rs 355). The Prawns Fry Masala (Rs 355) and Chicken Kerala (Rs 155) are known for their crunchiness. Do not forget to pair these dishes with the flaky Kerala Parotta (Rs 15).

If you are a fan of fusion food, you must check out the menu at Banana Leaf. The eatery serves over 40 varieties of dosas, 21 of which are fusion. Chettinadu Spicy Masala Dosa (Rs 190), Spinach Cheese Garlic Dosa (Rs 225), and Paneer Bhurji Dosa (Rs 250) are some of their most interesting options. The chef’s specials include Palak Palkaty Dosa (Rs 230), Cheese Potato Dosa (Rs 200), and Cheese Corn Dosa (Rs 220).

 Quirky and traditional

Vanakkam Cafe serves an extensive menu with a wide variety of idlis, dosas, vadas, uthappams, and more. The Open Pizza Dosa (Rs 300), Cheese Burst Waffle (Rs 300), Lava Idli (Rs 160), Khowsuey Idli (Rs 220), and Medu Wada Sandwich (Rs 180) are some of the exciting dishes served here.  You can also try their South Indian Thali (INR 250), which is served on a banana leaf for a traditional experience.

A humble eatery that serves traditional South Indian fare, Udipi Krishna is known for its flavourful dosa and fluffy idlis. The Palak Masala Dosa (Rs 115), Cheese Paper Sada Dosa (Rs 160), and Masala Uttapam (Rs 95) are a hit among patrons. If you’re a fan of spicy food, opt for the Spicy Paneer Chinese Dosa (Rs 135) or the Chilly Paneer Dosa (Rs 155).
