Girgaum Chowpatty
Favourite midnight snack
Years ago, when I used to live in South Mumbai, I had gone for bun maska with Vivek Vaswani. I asked the shopkeeper if it was fresh. He took it away from me and said, ‘I eat it and it’s fine with me, aapko khana hai toh khalo’. That’s when I realised that Mumbaikars are no-nonsense people. At night, we would head to an Irani café (I have filmed there too) near Shivaji Park with Aziz Mirza and Juhi (Chawla) and discuss films.
SRK learnt life lessons at an Irani café eating bun maska
The tastiest roadside dish
Whenever we shot at RK Studios, Yashji used to always feed us lachchedar paranthas from a shop nearby. Everybody on set would be excited about it, and look forward to shooting at RK just for the paranthas.
Best place to experience the first rains
Anywhere! I take all my kids out. I have got gumboots for my little one, and we splash away in the water.
First beach visit
When I first came to Mumbai, my friends and I thought that (Girgaum) Chowpatty is the only beach in the city since the Queen’s Necklace is what you see in most films. We had not been to Juhu beach. We were in the city for close to a week, and whenever we would tell the taxiwallah to take us to a beach, he would drive us to Chowpatty. It was very commercial and crowded.
On the last day of that particular visit, we asked our driver, who was a sardarji from Delhi, “Paaji, ithe aur bhi koi beach hai [Brother, is there any other beach in Mumbai?]. He drove us down to Madh Island, and we saw Aksa and Gorai beaches. Those felt like real beaches. It was lovely.
First stop on a Mumbai Darshan with SRK, the guide, would be?
CSMT railway station.
Favourite rooftop view from a Mumbai skyrise
It’s private, but Mr Mukesh Ambani’s rooftop at Antilia.
Have you visited the Sanjay Gandhi National Park?
I have shot a lot of films there. I liked it but I didn’t spot anything (laughs).
