Tucked in a bylane, near Vile Parle (East) railway station is Mohan & Sons, a nondescript farsan shop that has been catering to the area's snack lovers for over three decades. It was started in 1976 by Kerala-born Mohan Vasudevan Nair, who moved to Gujarat where he worked at farsan shops before settling down in Mumbai; here, he began his own farsan shop. Soon, he learnt that the suburb was dominated by Gujaratis and began selling snacks that were popular in Gujarat.

The shop developed an instant connect with the customers. His sons, Jagdeep and Harish Mohan Nair, now run the shop. Most items are made on a daily basis in a tiny factory beside the shop. Their popular picks include Papdi, its thicker version, Gathia, Nadiadi Chavanu (tangy mixed farsan with its roots in Nadiad, a city of Gujarat), Bakarwadi (stuffed rolls), Fulwadi (spicy fried croquettes), Nylon Chivda (hread-thin sev) and Dal Muth (chana dal, fried peas, sev, peanuts and spices.

One of their bestsellers is the Kachori (Rs 175, per kilo, in pic) whose patrons travel from South Mumbai even. On an average, 150 kilos of Kachori are sold daily. Keeping health-conscious consumers in mind, the shop has also cut down on oil usagein many items. Some of their diet varieties include Khakra, Rice Flakes and Corn Flakes.
