With evolving weekly menus, chef Vicky Ratnani’s The Speakeasy Kitchen has gained quite a following among local foodies. “I thought Speakeasy would be like a nice hidden gem in Bandra where cuisine has no boundaries,” he shares.  Think home-made hand-rolled pastas, urban Sindhi food, breakfast favourites such as dal pakwan and basar ji koki, festive spreads and fare inspired by seasonal produce including strawberries and pickled chillies, and more. “The food is very chef-centric as everything is made in-house, from buns and ketchups, to chips. It’s quite a labour of love actually,” Ratnani reveals. The treats can be ordered through food aggregator apps, but most of their orders are placed directly, he adds. On offer currently are game meal boxes, perfect for IPL nights. Give it a shot.

In the sea of new faces on the city’s food delivery scene is a familiar name, Hunger Inc, which runs the much-loved O’ Pedro, The Bombay Canteen, and Bombay Sweet Shop. Over the weekend, co-founders Yash Bhanage and Sameer Seth have dished out two delivery pop-ups, King Fu Canteen and Brun & Babka. While King Fu Canteen is slated to accept orders till April-end, Brun & Babka will offer new, fresh, limited-edition bakes every day, they tell us. “When the new curbs came into place, we started wondering what it is that we can do to motivate ourselves, so we revisited a few ideas. Indian Chinese has been on our minds since even before O’ Pedro,” says Seth, reminiscing about a trip that they took with the late chef-restaurateur Floyd Cardoz to Kolkata’s Chinese hotspots, such as Tangra and Tiretti Bazaar. And the notes from their gastronomic adventures at Chinatown ended up inspiring King Fu Canteen’s pick-me-up menu, which comprises mutton momos, choriz buns, marrow wontons, mei foon noodles, Tangra chilli jumbo crab and more. “Pastry chef Heena Punwani has been known for her baked products even before she joined us. For Brun & Babka, the idea is that she’ll bake a limited batch of fresh treats so that we sell out every day. There’ll be new things on the menu daily,”
Bhanage reveals.

Vegan fix

As someone who has wanted to adopt veganism, Wadala resident Pooja Gosher has found it difficult to negotiate the terrain of eating outside. “It’s not easy to find too many options.

Our focus is on continental food with Asian and north Indian options,” she adds about her Vile Parle-based vegan deli, The Bodhi Café. The menu offers fresh salads, corn cakes, cauliflower wings, wraps, jackfruit and soybean pizzas, and more.

Lucknow calling

Bandra resident Nida Rizvi made use of the lockdown to channel the Lucknawi culinary traits from her father’s side, and the Kashmiri-Iranian knowledge from her mother’s side. What emerged was a delicious variety of kebabs, curries, biryanis, tikkas and pulao, under the brand, Lakhnawi Kebabs & Kurries. “Our specials include chapli kebabs, masala boti kebabs, shami kebabs (in pic), Lucknawi pulao, Mughlai fare, paya and more,” she adds.

Gourmet station

Chef Divesh Aswani has been whipping up a storm with Commis Station, a one-stop-shop to make gourmet cooking a cakewalk. “We have our own sauces, pickles, breads, condiments and kitchen staples — anything that makes it easy to cook a gourmet meal. So, if you want to ever make a ramen bowl, we’ll provide you the raw noodles that are hard to find.

Then, there’s a wide range of breads from pitas to banh mi baguettes,” he shares. For those who want to dive right into the food, there is an eclectic assortment of unique ice-creams  such as black sesame and honey comb, and confections, including ingenious crepe cakes (in pic).
