The next time you’re in the mood for tasty, authentic Chinese food minus Indian flavouring or ingredients, give Mr. Chow’s a call

Food: Delicious
Service: Quick
Ambiance: NA

Mr. Chow’s is a relatively lesser-known eatery with three branches across the city — Colaba, Prabhadevi and Bandra. They promise healthy Chinese delicacies without the infamous taste enhancer, Ajinomoto, and their fare is cooked in sunflower oil.

Intrigued, we decided to do a takeaway from their Prabhadevi outlet on a weekday. From their menu, we logged on to their website Mrchows.in, which displays all the items, smartly categorised based on the main ingredients — noodles, rice, main course, starters, etc — which was a tad confusing to follow.

After much deliberation, thanks to the long list, we zeroed in on four items — Chicken in Ginger Honey Sauce (Rs 295), Jade Prawns (Rs 380), Shantung Veg Noodles (Rs 225) and Roast Lamb Pot Rice (Rs 300).

Thumbs up
Mr. Chow’s offers home delivery service across a wide radius. Their Prabhadevi outlet covers distances from Shivaji Park to Pedder Road, up to Parel, Dadar (E), Sewri and Lalbaug too. Our takeaway arrived after 45 minutes, as promised, and was packed well in four plastic containers. The food was still very hot; in fact we noticed the steam emanating from each dish.

First up, we approached the Roast Lamb Pot Rice. With the right combination of spices, and a generous amount of lamb pieces, rice and vegetables, it had us excited from the first bite. Much to our surprise, the meat pieces were juicy, a sign of its freshness. Full marks.

The Jade Prawns added a healthy touch to the meal with its combination of leeks, prawns, garlic and white sauce. The prawns were cooked well making it the most exciting dish after the Roast Lamb Pot Rice. The Chicken in Ginger in Honey Sauce got our attention too for its sweet-sour fusion, and could make for an interesting accompaniment with steamed rice or noodles.

Thumbs down
The Shantung Noodles failed to match up to our raised expectations in comparison to the previous three dishes. But most disappointingly, our parcel arrived without any tissues. Elementary mistake. But these glitches apart, Mr. Chow’s promises (and delivers) most things right for anybody in the mood for tasty and comforting Chinese food.

NOTE: The minimum order for home delivery is Rs 300.
