The past year has seen several new places with the make-your-own-wok option. It entails picking a base (noodles or rice), sauce, protein and veggies or meat, which is cooked in front of you. Wok This Way in Lower Parel (not to be confused with Wok This Way of Versova; same name, different owners) will suit office-goers looking for healthy vegetarian lunch options.
It offers nearly 10 sauces and a few Teppanyaki Grill options too. We picked two medium-sized woks (Rs 199 each) cooked in Hunan and Teriyaki sauce. We also ordered a Dish of the Month (Rs 299), which was supposed to be a Lhasa Soup.
Lhasa soup was a chef special for the month
Extra points for quick service and attendants familiar with the menu. The portions were lesser than at most wok places. Luckily, the Hunan wok, prepared with red rice, was the lunch we crave for — less cooking time, unpolished whole grains and a spicy-sweet sauce.
The Teriyaki sauce left a bitter after taste
The Teriyaki sauce wok with noodles tasted good but left a bitter aftertaste. The Lhasa soup had us puzzled. It came with flat spoons, and tasted more like a Thai curry. However, the ingredients, egg-shaped cottage cheese and vegetarian sausages wowed us. Their ready made cold-pressed juices (Rs 149) or Java Cake (Rs 149) are ideal to round things off.
