American chain Krispy Kreme Doughnuts, which opens its first outlet in the city in Powai, offers a variety of flavours. They’d work — if the chain goes easy on the sugar

Donuts

The assorted Krispy Kreme doughtnut box seems to have something for everybody — the sugar junkie in the group, the one with will-eat-anything-with mango eyes, et al. Even the one who watches her weighing scale closely is seen hovering. We notice a doughnut sprinkled with cookies, another with almond slivers, one good, ol’ chocolate doughnut, and some others all plumped up with strawberry, mango, orange and pineapple fillings.

After a sizeable bite off each of the 12 assorted doughnuts, here’s the verdict:

Kookie Crunch (Rs 69): We bite into this after tasting the Chocolate Iced Sprinkles and the Almond All Over doughnuts, neither of which do justice to their flavours because of the overpowering sugar content. The Kookie Crunch is a tad more distinguishable because of the bitterness of the dark chocolate cookies — a welcome change.

Mango Kreme Krunch (Rs 69): This one — slightly tangy, very mango-ey — stands out for some of us, but that is more out of relief (it isn’t overtly sweet) than genuine appreciation. Glazed Cinnamon (Rs 69): If you know your cinnamon and how light-handed you need to be with it to really dazzle, we hat-tip you. In this case, let’s just say we go about halfway. The cinnamon doughnut is all right — a tad too sweet (again, we know) — but we’ll live.

Chocolate Iced Custard Filled (Rs 69): Gooey custard spilling out of a hot doughnut — good. The aftertaste that says, ‘Sugar, sugar’ — avoidable.

Original Glazed (Rs 49): A bite of this and we are back to loving doughnuts. Simple, shiny, squishy doughnut, just like a perfect doughnut should be in an imperfect world.
