Go to Blu Balcony in Oshiwara for a casual drink, but skip the food

Oshiwara's newest addition, The Blu Balcony, has great ambiance. The same, however, can't be said about the food

Located in one of the busiest bylanes of Oshiwara that is host to several malls, eateries and pubs, is a small restaurant called The Blu Balcony that could be mistaken for an old bungalow.

The Lamb Moussaka is the speciality dish at Blu Balcony

Staying true to its name, a blue board guides us to the restaurant, which cuts us from the noisy street to a peaceful atmosphere tastefully done up in blue and white. Our only complaint, the chairs are too far away from each other and rather uncomfortable.

The menu is replete with several Mediterranean options, and includes an interesting array of Turkish and Greek cuisine. We decide to sample the Chef’s Special Prawns (Rs 367) and a Barbeque Chicken Salad (R147) for appetisers. The salad comes with a fresh mix of lettuce and cherry tomatoes but the dressing is too little that gives it a very dry flavour. The prawns are cooked to perfection but yet again, they come infused with a white creamy sauce, too sweet for our liking.

The mocktail menu is impressive with classics as well as modern fruit and fizzy mixes. We order the Blue Yonder (R167), a mixed fruit mocktail with a heady mix of coconut milk, which is quite refreshing. The Blue Sea (R227), a fizzy drink with the right balance of mint and lemon, is a good one too.

For the main course, we go by our server’s recommendation. The Lamb Moussaka (R397), he insisted, was one of their specialities. The moussaka is served over a flaming stove and is a baked minced meat dish with a layer of cheese, accompanied with slices of pita bread. It is perfectly cooked. Neither too runny, nor too dry. It gets our thumbs up!

To satisfy our sweet cravings, we order the only dessert on their menu – the Hot Chocolate Pot with Hazelnut (R177). An overly moist mudcake, which lacks the promised chocolatey flavour, it’s decidedly disappointing.
Go to the Blu Balcony for a drink with your friends or a casual tête-à-tête with your colleagues. As for the food, they can do much better!
