Food special: Eggs-traordinary eateries in and around Mumbai

From morning meals to midnight snacks, the humble egg has always been a perennial favourite with hungry Mumbaikars. Being the versatile little yolk it is, the egg lends itself to many avatars. Fry it, bake it, poach it, or if you prefer, whip it into kofta or have it with olives in pita bread. It’s not surprising then, that there are eateries in the city with menus dedicated to just eggs. Here’s what we recommend from each.

Egg Sunday

Located at a buzzing food court off the Mumbai-Pune Expressway, Egg Sunday caters to hungry travellers. Launched in November 2009, the eatery has four outlets out of which one is near Mumbai and the rest are in Talegaon, Manor and Kolhapur. “The idea was to set it up at highways, where you hardly get to see good, hygienic eateries,” says owner Rohit Saigal, former creative head of a media company. The open kitchen allows onlookers to witness the chefs in action as they toss, flip and beat the eggs. “Our bestselling items are the Eggs benedict ('175) that consists of two halves of an English muffin, topped with ham and hollandaise sauce and the Farmer’s omlette ('120), which also has chicken, black olives and parboiled potatoes,” he adds. The biggest challenge, says the Malad resident, is selling a niché cuisine. “We are planning to expand and will open a franchise in Kolhapur this October,” he says.

Egg Zone
It’s the option for eggetarians with a modest budget. Set up in June, this eatery is located in Borivli West and has rather eclectic options such as egg pizza ('90), egg manchurian fry ('90). The dish most in demand is the anda ghotala ('80), which comprises fried egg with spices and vegetables and is normally relished with pav or parathas. The two-month-old joint is the baby of Gaurav Vyas, who also runs another business. The shop sees around 50-70 customers a day.

Egg Adda

This is the latest entrant in the league of eggs-traordinary eateries. Less than a month old, this space caters to those looking to grab a quick bite after a bar-hopping session. “We have borrowed the concept of meals on wheels, where we prepare a quick snack for people who are strapped for time, but inside a dedicated space,” says co-founder Sudeep Choksi who established the place along with three childhood friends, Kunal Chaudhary, Ishan Garodia and Rahul Saraogi. The menu boasts of around 75 egg-only dishes, and is divided into starters (Egg papripka at '130, egg masala pav burger for '70), health specials (fat free omlette and egg salad for '120), and the chef’s special (Egg bong that is Kolkata-styled egg made in schezwan sauce for '90). “Our highest selling item is the Bombay fry ('110) which is a half fry with a chef’s special gravy,” says Choksi.
