Biryani is among the most versatile dishes that uses varied regional flavours. With the number of memes to its name, the dish is a sort of pop icon. People have strong opinions about whether it should have elaichi or not while purists argue against vegetarian versions. However, there is no denying that everyone who is remotely fond of food is a fan of biryani. Actor Priyanka Chopra is no different, as she revealed her love for the dish in a recent interview.  We’ve rounded up a list of seven places in Mumbai where you can try the most exciting biryanis.


Persian flavours


Famed for its mouth-watering biryani, the Persian Darbar has multiple outlets across the city. The decades-old establishment serves delightful North Indianfare. The star of their menu is the Persian Special Biryani with vegetables (INR 395), chicken (INR 575), or mutton (INR 645). Each serving is traditionally cooked in a sealed pot and is sufficient for 2-3 people.

Midnight cravings

Shalimar’s credentials as a biryani hot-spot are affirmed with its location at the popular Mohammad Ali Road. Their menu offers several biryanis, from Chicken Kabsa Biryani (INR 695) to Paneer Tikka Biryani (INR 460). The exquisite Raan Biryani (INR 2300) is the perfect fusion of taste, texture, and aroma. The indulgent dish is surely not to be missed. For those with nightly cravings, Shalimar delivers till 2 AM.

Traditional Dum Pukht biryani

The traditional dum pukht biryani is supposed to be cooked at a slow pace to lend the dish its authentic flavours. Known for its Mughlai and Lucknowi fare, Kebabs and Kurries serves a decadent Dum Pukht Biryani (INR 1700). A treat for taste-buds, the signature dish has Basmati rice and lamb simmered with ittar, mace, and kewra.

Calcutta-style


The Calcutta-style biryani has its share of followers. Oh! Calcutta has taken these regional flavours across the nation. Their authentic Calcutta biryani with chicken (INR 395) or mutton (IR 525) is no less than a burst of flavour in your mouth. They also offer an option for vegetarians; the Nawabi Subz Biryani (INR 345) cooked in traditional Awadhi spices.

Aloo, chicken tikka, and more


Zaffran is a popular haunt among foodies in the city. The eatery offers lip-smacking biryanis to suit varied preferences, including vegetarians. Their innovative MasaledaarAloo Biryani (INR 450) is a hit among patrons for its bold flavours. Whereas, the Chicken Tikka Biryani (INR 385) comes highly recommended as well.

Hyderabadi delight

Gallops is the ideal place to go to if you’re a fan of Hyderabadi dum-style biryani. No lover of biryani must skip on this dum-style biryani with perfectly blended spices and juicy meat.

If you have biryani cravings but prefer staying home, Go Biryan is the solution you need. The delivery-only kitchen has outlets across the city offering an extensive menu. Dig in Chicken Chettinad Biryani (INR 240) or Bohri Style Lamb Biryani (INR 305) if you want to try some regional specialities or opt for the experimental, Chicken Schezwan Tikka Biryani (INR 279). The Paneer Roast Masala Biryani (INR 249) is delicious and makes for an excellent option for vegetarians.
