Mumbai to Bombay, and back
Book Ahead
To trek around Byculla, would be to visit two cities — one the Bombay of yore, and one, the Mumbai of today. Once a low-lying swamp, Byculla benefitted from crucial reclamation work and grew into a rich residential suburb in the early 19th century, attracting the most affluent of Bombay's citizens and its most sophisticated infrastructure — including its very first museum! Later, the mills transformed the neighbourhood, and the The Bombay Plague of the 1890 left its mark on Byculla permanently. It also saw terrible riots during 1936-37, which rose during a temple-mosque dispute. The Inheritage Project plans to focus on the area's physical spaces and unique contemporary character, and this walk will encourage an exploration of the city's complex histories, its present moment and potential futures.
