As a three-year-old Mohini Dey remembers being fascinated with the bass guitar. “I used to obsess over it, and just pick it up and play,” she recalls. Her musician father, Sujoy, and his bassist friends, who would jam at the Dey residence, were the immediate inspiration.
Noticing her love for music, Sujoy made his daughter an instrument that he had crafted using pieces of wood. It would be her first bass instrument. Today, the Mumbai-based artiste has become a prodigy of sorts. At the age of 20, Mohini is already an established name in industry, having performed alongside Zakir Hussain, AR Rahman, Louiz Banks, Gino Banks, Loy Mendonsa,Clinton Cerejo, Salim-Sulaiman, among others.
The young bass guitarist will be sharing her musical experience, which spans over a decade, at a three-city masterclass tour. The two-hour class, to be held later this month in Mumbai, will see Mohini acquaint performing artistes with newer techniques to play the bass. “I will focus on harmonic knowledge, and will also be sharing exercises to help make one’s music more versatile,” she says. But, this masterclass will not just be about music, says Mohini. “I will also be talking about life, and how to deal with people. Our life and character are so inter-connected with music. Your attitude is visible in the way you play. So, it becomes important to look into that aspect of oneself too,” the artiste adds.
Prior knowledge of playing the guitar is required to enroll for the session.
