A money-wise holiday

As a tourist, you might as well wear a sign that says, 'Fleece me now'. But as a smart tourist, you could follow our invaluable money advice on your next holiday.

It may sound like too much of a fuss, but many tourists wear money belts, hidden neck and waist pouches.

Some even go as far as having hidden, zippered sections in their clothes to keep the money. Or you could just take the risk and have your money stolen. It's your call, really.

At popular tourist destinations, every second grocery store doubles up as a currency exchange service.

These guys may not be authorised and charge you a sky-high commission. It's wiser to opt for the airport exchange services or a proper international bank.

Unless, you'd rather exchange currencies with a greasy, not-showered-for-days character sporting a skulls and bone tattoo.

It might be hard to believe, but there are quite a few credit card companies that don't charge you high interest when you're swiping your card abroad.

Shop around for the right credit card before you go on holiday, and it might be the best purchase of your trip.

When you receive your foreign currency, tuck the big notes away safely; only keep smaller notes in your wallet, for tipping and fares. So when you open it up to pay the person, their eyes don't get to see a reason to rob you.

You're less likely to get swindled if you depend on your hotel for taxi services, tour guides and other tourist-related information. They screen all services for authenticity before offering them to you. That way you are secure, and their reputation, intact.

Banks like State Bank of India offer pre-paid card facility. It works on the same principle as a pre-paid mobile card. It's available in three currencies Dollars, Pounds and Euros. You can refill it, if you run out of money and if it gets stolen, you still have the last laugh.
