The advent of technology and infrastructure has been a boon in difficult times. We have access to better facilities, better amenities, advanced medical care, and several other benefits.

The Indian government has been pioneering in ensuring the well-being of the citizens by investing time and money into the research and development of these services. It is not easy to cater to a population as large and as diverse as India’s.

A lot of planning and consideration goes into the development of schemes and policies that would benefit most citizens without discrimination. The fundamental rights of each citizen allow them to have access to medical care within the country; this is particularly true in unprecedented times.

Being aware about the health plans offered by one’s country is vital. Be it a comprehensive health insurance plan or a government health scheme - health insurance is important for every individual. Educating ourselves about different policies out there would then allow us to make an informed decision about the ones we can opt for ourselves and our families.

Getting insured would lift a load off of our heads especially in times of emergencies. Additionally, there is no age limit when it comes to getting insurance. In fact, it is advisable that from the age as young as 15, families must invest in the health insurance of young adults as well. This ensures maximum coverage from a young age. The Indian government takes into consideration multiple factors before introducing schemes from their side to ensure equality for all citizens alike.

This ensures maximum coverage from a young age. The Indian government takes into consideration multiple factors before introducing schemes from their side to ensure equality for all citizens alike.

Several government health insurance schemes have been introduced to benefit us. Let’s look at a few of them:

Ayushman Bharat: This policy takes into account the Universal Health Coverage and aims at making health services in India more comprehensive in nature. It holistically looks at the healthcare sector and strives to ensure that constant care is provided to the Indian citizens.

Within the policies of Ayushman Bharat, about 1,50,000 health and wellness centers have been opened and a scheme for the lower socio-economic strata has been introduced which offers coverage of 5,00,000INR per annum.

Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana: The scheme particularly caters to a select few vocations such as – weaving, carpentry, handloom, etc. 48 vocations are selected and defined to be an active part of this scheme. The policy is made at 30,000INR with a premium of 200INR per year.

The various eligibility criteria are also clearly mentioned – the family head or an earning member to be around the poverty line and should be into one of the vocations mentioned in the clause.

Central Government Health Scheme: Initiated by the Central Government of India, this policy works for the employees of the Central Government. This is a long-running policy of about 6 decades and has benefitted up to 35 lakh employees. Hospitalization, home care, allopathy, and homeopathy medicines in 71 cities are a part of this plan.

Mahatma Jyotiba Phule Jan Arogya Yojana: This is specific to the citizens of Maharashtra launched by their government. It was updated and revised in 2017. Farmers from certain districts and individuals from below the poverty line across the state are deemed eligible. Several diseases mentioned in the scheme are included and a family cover along with a benefit of 1,50,000INR would be provided. The Government of Maharashtra has also come up with new schemes to fight newer challenges for government employees.

Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Insurance Scheme: The state government of Tamil Nadu collaborated with United India Insurance Company Ltd. to form this policy for the provision of health benefits. It is a ‘family floater’ plan specifically created for quality health care. The residents of the state with an income of less than 75,000INR annually are encouraged to apply. Hospitalization expenses for about 5 lakh INR in chosen private and government hospitals are included.

Particularly in Tamil Nadu, during the inauguration of AIIMS as a healthcare facility, Modicare health insurance was also announced by the Central Government. 89,000+ individuals could reap the benefits of this specific scheme.

Our government has capably looked after and ensured maximum health benefits to a majority of the Indian population. Interestingly, insurance companies, by themselves are also offering several rewards to their beneficiaries if they strive to stay fit and healthy. The amount of work done by the government and private companies as well is immense. Let us make the best use of these opportunities provided to us and invest in the best health insurance schemes.
