Skilled workers can directly apply for Canadian permanent residency if they qualify for a program.

7 ways for Indian citizens to immigrate to Canada and obtain permanent residence are:

  1.     Express Entry – Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

For professionals with at least 1 year of skilled work experience.

If you qualify under any of these programs, then only can you apply under the Express Entry program:

1 Federal Skilled Worker (FSW)

2 Federal Skilled Trades (FST)

3 Canadian Experience Class (CEC)

The minimum requirements to apply under the Express Entry as a skilled worker are –

  1. In the last 10 years, at least 1 year of uninterrupted full-time (or comparable part-time) work experience in a skilled occupation.
  2. Possessing a post-secondary education that can be assessed against Canadian standards with an Educational Credential Assessment
  3. On an approved language test, score of a minimum of Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) seven in either English or French.
  1.     Provincial Nominee Programs (PNPs)

Canada is divided into 10 provinces and 3 territories. PNPs are considered to be the fastest pathway to Canadian permanent residence.

Quebec and Nunavut are not a part of the PNP of Canada.

Around 80 Canadian immigration pathways exist under the PNP. While some are linked with the federal Express Entry system, others operate independently.

The decision for granting Canadian permanent residence lies with the federal government.

  1.     Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSW)

Like the Express Entry system, the Quebec Skilled Worker Program (QSW), uses the points system to invite the top scorers to apply.

  1.     Intra-Company Transfers or Work Permits

If you work in a multinational company with offices in Canada, then you may be eligible for a transfer. This involves lesser amount of paperwork.

  1.     Business Visas

The Canada business immigration category is aimed at attracting experienced business people to the country.

Business people that wish to immigrate to Canada can invest, start a new business and generate profits and employment for Canadians.

The 3 main Canada business visa categories are:

1 Immigrant Investor Venture Capital Visa: Candidates that have a personal net worth of minimum $10 million CND, and are ready to make an at-risk investment of at least $2 million CND into Canada's Immigrant Investor Venture Capital fund are eligible to apply.

2 Start-up Visa: Designed to cater to business owners or part-owners with substantial experience that have the capability to successfully run a business in Canada, which generates both revenue and employment.

3 Self-Employed Immigrant Visa: If you have the know-how in athletics, cultural activities, or farm management, and the intention to become self-employed in Canada, then you can apply under this visa category.

  1.     Temporary Residence to Permanent Residence

Between 2016 to 2019, Canada saw a 50% increase in the number of applicants transferring from temporary to permanent residence status.

With an easier transition into the Canadian society, international students are considered as blue-chip candidates for permanent residence by the Canadian government.

  1.     Family Class Sponsorship Program

A Canadian permanent resident or citizen that has a family member interested in immigrating to Canada can help them become a permanent resident.

To be eligible to apply under the family class sponsorship program, the person seeking sponsorship should be a:

  • Spouse, common-law or conjugal partner
  • Dependent child
  • Parent
  • Grandparent
  • Sibling, nephew, niece, or grandchild under 18 years and unmarried and whose parents are deceased.

The above is not an exhaustive list of programs available.
