Ducati is all set to get newer riders into its fold with the launch of two new entry-level bikes, the Monster 797, priced at Rs 7.77 lakh (ex-Delhi) and the Multistrada 950, priced at Rs 12.6 lakh (ex-India). The Monster 797 is the smallest and most affordable bike in the Monster range, which comprises of the Monster 821 and Monster 1200, while the Multistrada 950 slots below the Multistrada 1200 and the Multistrada Enduro.
The Monster 797 is styled similar to the Monster 821 and Monster 1200 but gets subtle design changes like the 10-spoke alloys, red trellis frame and a single exhaust can.
The Monster 797's powerplant is based on the Ducati Scrambler's 803cc L-twin motor, which makes 76PS @ 8250rpm and 68.9Nm of torque @ 5750rpm, which is 0.9Nm more than the Scrambler. When compared to the Monster 821, the 797 is down on power by around 37PS. Power is sent to the rear wheel via a 6-speed gearbox and slipper clutch is offered as standard.
Tyres and suspension parts are same as the Monster 821. The high-spec equipment include KYB 43mm upside down forks up front and a fully adjustable Sachs monoshock at the rear. Tyres are Pirelli Diablo Rosso IIs and braking duties are managed by twin 320mm discs with Brembo Monobloc M4.32 callipers up-front and a single 245mm disc with a single-piston calliper at the rear, with 9.1MP Bosch ABS offered as standard.
The bike weighs 175kg (dry) and is 4.5kilos lighter than the 821. Fuel tank capacity is 16.5 litres, while a seat height of 805mm makes it accessible for shorter riders as well.
The Monster 797 will compete against the Triumph Street Triple S.
Multistrada 950
The Multistrada 950 too carries a design similar to its larger cousins with subtle differences like a single exhaust canister and halogen headlamps instead of LEDs.
It gets a 937cc, L-twin engine shared with the Hypermotard 939, albeit with revised cylinder heads. The motor makes 115PS @ 9000rpm and 96.2Nm of torque @ 7750rpm which is 1Nm less than the Hypermotard. The bike gets ABS, Ducati Traction Control (DTC) and four riding modes - Sport, Touring, Urban and Enduro.
The Multistrada 950 gets fully adjustable 48mm KYB upside down forks up front and fully adjustable Sachs monoshock at the rear. The bike gets 19-inch front and 17-inch rear wheels shod with Pirelli Scorpion Trail II tyres.
Braking is courtesy dual 320mm discs with Brembo Monobloc callipers and a 265mm disc with 2-piston floating calliper at the rear. Dry weight is 204kg. Seat height for India has been set to 820mm as standard to make the bike more accessible to shorter riders. The bike has a fuel tank capacity of 20 litres.
The Multistrada 950 will face competition from the Triumph Tiger 800, Kawasaki Versys 1000, Honda Africa Twin and the Suzuki V-Strom.
Bookings for both the bikes are now open and deliveries will commence from next month.
