Acne is most prevalent in summers. Primarily due to humidity, coupled with the poor air quality. Poor skin condition is the last thing we want in summers especially when we want to flaunt our summer wardrobe. Although, a stubborn acne breakout can be a real pain, but that doesn’t mean we can’t do anything about it.

Dermatologists say following a right skincare routine can help deal with the problem. “Following a correct summer skincare routine, consuming the right food and drinks and getting enough sleep can help deal with acne and support healthy, glowing skin,” says Dr Sonali Kohli, consultant dermatologist and venereologist, Sir H.N. Reliance Foundation Hospital and Research Centre.

While we might think that the long process of applying various kinds of serums and creams is an exaggeration, more so a mere social media trend, Dr Kohli stresses the importance of adopting a basic skincare routine, especially during summer.

Kohli suggests the following easy tips to follow each day:

Cleansing routine

You must use a gentle, non-comedogenic (products that don’t clog pores) cleanser. This helps to remove dirt, oil, and sweat from your skin like micellar water (a product that helps lift dirt from the skin) before washing your face. Avoid over-cleansing or using harsh products. This stands the risk of stripping your skin of its natural oils and exacerbating acne.

Moisturising
Applying moisturiser daily on your face prevents complete dryness and flakiness that worsens acne. You must use a moisturiser which is lightweight, gel-based and non-comedogenic.

Sunscreen
Conditions have worsened due to global warming and the ozone layer's depletion. Direct exposure to the sun’s harmful UV rays can trigger acne breakouts, and cause dark spots and hyperpigmentation. Protecting your skin from the sun is thus imperative. You must apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher when stepping out of the house.

Besides the skincare routine, Kohli also suggests adopting a few healthy habits:

Stay hydrated
Drinking plenty of water can help flush out toxins from the body and keep your skin hydrated and healthy throughout the day.

Avoid touching your face
Touching your face can transfer bacteria and oils from your hands to your skin, which can trigger acne breakouts. Popping pimples is another habit many have, which must be avoided.

Avoid heavy makeup
Applying makeup might help hide acne temporarily but can damage the skin even more in the long run. Heavy makeup clogs the skin’s pores and exacerbates acne. Instead, opt for lightweight, oil-free products that won't suffocate your skin.

Eating right is a must
Just as following skincare is a must, keeping the gut clean and healthy is equally important to treat acne. Kohli says, “Eating a healthy, balanced diet can help nourish your skin and ensure it looks the best during the summer season.”

Here are some foods to include in your diet this summer:
1. Water-rich fruits and vegetables such as watermelon, cucumber, and celery. Such foods keep the skin hydrated.
2. Foods rich in antioxidants like berries which protect the skin from damage caused by UV radiation and other environmental stressors like pollution.
3. Probiotic-rich foods like yogurt, kefir, and sauerkraut. They support a healthy gut microbiome, important for overall skin

By incorporating these foods into your summer diet, you can help support healthy, glowing skin. Speaking about the foods that must be avoided during the hot summers, she says, “Avoid processed and sugary foods, which can contribute to inflammation and breakouts.”

Kohli also says that the kind of fabrics we use also determines the condition of our skin. “To prevent fabrics from causing acne, you must opt for lightweight, breathable fabrics like cotton and avoid tight-fitting clothing that can trap sweat and bacteria against your skin,” Dr Kohli suggests.

By following these tips, you can prevent or at least manage summer acne breakouts and keep your skin clear and healthy. However, if you continue to struggle with acne, it may be helpful to consult with a dermatologist for personalized advice and treatment options.
