Facebook has launched a new scheme called Express Wi-fi to produce internet access to underserved places in India.
Express Wi-fi offers software to local entrepreneurs, which will allow them to work with service providers and share their internet connection with people where internet connectivity is scarce. This service will come with a fee for those who are using it for the first time, unlike the Google WiFi at railway stations. With the help of this scheme, users can browse through a variety of services like news and weather reports. Facebook stated that very soon it would expand its Express Wi-Fi to other regions also.
Facebook does still not make the cost detail of accessing the internet under this new scheme clear. At the same time, the social networking giant also did not make it clear that where exactly in India the service is available. However, it reported that the scheme is already implemented across some 100 Indian villages. Users of those villages can electronically buy internet for use at a nominal cost of Rs. 10.
Express Wi-Fi is part of Facebook’s larger Internet.org mission, which aims to spread out internet connectivity across the world and especially in those areas where reach of internet is next to impossible.
