Swan song for a salon? Mad o Wot?

Celeb hairstylist Sapna Bhavnani's recently formed Mad o Wot Production House aims to support independent music videos and short films. Their first venture, the video of the track Mad o Wot, will air on Zoom next week. FYI gets the details

You gotta stand for something else, goes the chorus in Sapna Bhavnani's video, Mad O Wot.

Fiercely individualistic and with a knack for doing things differently, the line may as well be Bhavnani's mantra. But why a production house of all things?

"It all started when I approached music director Arijit Datta to make a 20-second jingle for my website. My brief was that it should reflect Mumbai to the core," grins Sapna. And that's where the ball started rolling from.







The song's video got funding from an undisclosed benefactor. And the video led to the creation of a production house.

Their focus will be to "support short films" and provide them with an even platform.

Arijit roped in vocalists Ishq Bector, Uma Shankar Nair (of Uff Teri Adaa fame), Ranjit Arapurakal, Abbas Syed, and Sharib Hashmi to create madness with Hip-Hop, R'n'B and Qawalli.

In Sapna's words the track has Ishq's Bambaiiya rap, Uma's Rhythm 'N' Blues and Sharib and Abbas's zafran laced Qawalli. The video too promises to be as eclectic as its sound.

Raghu Ram and Rajiv Lakshman, of Roadies fame, were roped in as salon ambassadors and star in the video.

Directed by Shiraz Bhattacharya, the video depicts the twins getting out of jail, in Rip Van Winkle mode, after 20 years.

They run into Bhavnani, or a white jumpsuit-clad Elvis and ask for makeovers. In between, there are people wanting to look like somebody else.

While an unknown Lata wants to be a Bipasha, yet another wants to be a Mahi (incidentally, all Bhavnani's clients).

What better way to bring out Mumbai's essence than by telling the story of the struggler? But through it all comes Bhavnani's message for individuality.

"I have always stood for being true to oneself. Don't blindly follow trends and don't try to be someone you're not unless you're an actor," says Bhavnani.

What next for this multifaceted stylist? "I am in the process of writing a Bollywood script. You never know who might like it and decide to fund it just like the video," she grins.
