Maharashtra Hast Kala Udhyog has opened shop in Versova and offers pieces created with the state's intrinsic textile arts including hand-block prints, Warli art and batik technique

State of design

With an aim to protect traditional art and craft from the state, Maharashtra Hastkala Udhyog (MHKU), which has factories in Dahanu and Vasai, has now launched its flagship store in the city. It’s objective is to give weavers and artisans a platform to display their works.

To give you a sneak peak into the collection, the Guide picked three pieces that stood out in the collection available at the store

Dupatta Rs 1,400
The embroidery is done by machine using bold colours to uplift the design. Supernet is used as the base fabric

MHKU trains artisans and supplies them with raw materials to make goods, thus trying to make them self-reliant. The MHKU factory provides end-to-end processing of cloth from raw material to designer attire and dyeing, printing, stitching, embroidery, etc is done there.

Pink suit Rs 2,500
The fuschia top and the black and white printed bottoms are created out of cotton and matched with a machine-embroidered supernet dupatta. The dupatta has been first printed and then machine work was done on it. Pics/Shadab Khan.

“We started a project a decade ago in Vasai where we employed unemployed people. We not only trained these artisans but also developed their design sensibility. Then we started supplying to different places and finally now decided to open our own store,’ says Jaffar Shaikh, founder, MHKU, who has an experience of 30 years in the textile industry.

Warli saree Rs 3,500
The supernet saree that brings forth warli art designs in hand work also uses mirror work to give it an edge. The subtle colour combination maintains the elegance of the saree

When we dropped by, we realised that the store, ends before it starts. However, the compact space stalks a variety of products ranging from readymade kurtas, dress materials to sarees and even bed sheets amongst other things.
