Pink, and its various definitions

That the colour pink is associated with contemporary girlhood is well known. What's interesting is that the colour has turned synonymous with femininity, thanks to Western fashion. In Japan, in fact, the colour is a sign of masculinity. Back home, it signifies welcome embrace. Pink denotes romance and charm, and its various shades, including hot pink, are used to convey emotions ranging from sensual playfulness to tenderness.

No other colour exemplifies sharp duality like pink does; it can be a mark of weakness and
innocence, and when a couple of shades darker, becomes the epitome of feminine power.

It has even been used as descriptive term for female genitalia, and is slang for vagina. The
lesbian/gay/bisexual/transgender communities adopt it with pride, with "pink economy" referring to economic activity in the gay community. The colour is also a symbol of strength and pride: it's the chosen shade for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

What's girl power got to do with the colour of your hair and clothes?
You can be blonde, frivolous, tip toe in stilettos, wear pink, dress your Chihuahua Bruiser, in matching attire, and yet be damn successful. That's the message Elle Woods sent to the audiences in 2001 Hollywood blockbuster Legally Blonde. The comedy starring Reese Witherspoon now enjoys the spotlight as a Broadway musical.
