Mumbai's mirror image

The city is undergoing a constant makeover in the name of development, feels photographer Chandu Mhatre, whose 36 photographs clicked in Mumbai will be on display at the Piramal Art Gallery, starting Wednesday.

Be it the Ban Banga, Juhu Beach, Mahim Fort or the Gateway of India, Mhatre, whose career spans over four decades, has captured the city to chronicle how it has changed as the emblem of the globalisation and liberalisation of the Indian economy.

“Sea links, highways and flyovers inundated with vehicles have added to the frantic pace of life. Contemporary life in Mumbai is a vibrant kaleidoscope of colours and images and I have tried to capture the city seen reflected on mirrored walls, windows and doors,” says the Delhi-based photographer, adding that documenting life in Mumbai is an on-going process as the city is always changing.

We especially like the photo of Gateway of India taken from inside the Taj hotel (pic on the left). “I clicked the picture in front of the waterfall. None of my photographs have added effects,” smiles Mhatre.

The pictures are on sale and range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 90,000. So if you have been meaning to take home a reflection of the city, you know where to head.
