Let's chaat about Delhi

Dilli 6, the new restaurant in Andheri-East promises reasonably tasty North Indian vegetarian fare. But don't step in expecting asli khana of Delhi's khao galli variety

We spent a good ten minutes in the JB Nagar locality of Andheri East, attempting to locate the recent addition on our restaurant review checklist. Finally, when we spotted Dilli 6 ufffd The Food Capital, the in-your-face-Bollywood inspiration piqued our interest considerably.

Methi Paratha

As we entered, we noticed that it was a tiny place, with no room for a separate wash area. But, with round tables and simple chairs it had a friendly casual vibe ufffd the kind of place we would like to go for a quick bite with some friends.

The ambient music in the background and the television, which was showing a Hindi movie (on mute), put us into relax mode.

Having settled in, we were handed over a simple-looking menu. Being a Delhi-inspired joint, we decided to begin with parathas. We ordered a Methi Paratha (Rs 50), which was accompanied by chhole and dahi. It was delicious; the eventual winner of the evening at Dilli 6.

For our mains, we ordered the Chatpate Masala Chaval (Rs 60). It wasn't too spicy and was without a masala overkill. Nice, though it was nothing to write home about, in the taste department. The bright red plates ensured we stayed focused on the food ufffd delicious or otherwise. Admittedly, it did lighten up things, inside Dilli 6's simple interiors.

Our throats were a bit dry after all the eating and so we decided to go ahead and try a few mocktails that were featured under the beverages section on the menu ufffd only to be told that none of the mocktails were available. Dejected, we took the attendant's recommendation to sample Shikanji (Rs 30). It was lemonade with soda and a dash of masala ufffd refreshing and a mood lifter. The Hot Chocolate (Rs 40) was also nice, except that it was piping hot when it arrived at our table.

Suddenly, it dawned on us that the chaat section hadn't been savoured as yet. The owner informed us that Delhi 6 is the address of Delhi's Khao Gali, hence the dedication. Sev Puri (Rs 32) was promptly ordered. A salty overkill had us in a tizzy and we felt awfully guilty having to forego the rest of this snack. Despite its unpredictability, the simplicity of its food would make us drop by if we are in this part of town.
