The Indian automotive industry is eyeing markets beyond our borders. Apart from being an export hub that ships cars out to markets like Europe and Latin America, India is surrounded by emerging markets that offer great sales potential, including Nepal, Bhutan and of course, Bangladesh. With the intention of strengthening their standing in Bangladesh, Indian automakers will be organizing a motor show in February 2017.

The Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) will be collaborating with its counterpart in Bangladesh to host what will be called the ‘Dhaka Automotive Show’. According to a report by Business Standard, manufacturers such as Maruti Suzuki, Mahindra, Tata Motors and Ashok Leyland have shown interest in participating. Two-wheeler manufacturers like Bajaj and Hero MotoCorp could also have showcases of their own at the event.

So why are Indian automakers keen to showcase their products in Bangladesh? Well, our eastern neighbour’s per capita income has risen, giving more people a better disposable income to buy a car/motorcycle of their own. Additionally, authorities from Bangladesh are looking to gain insight on India’s automotive manufacturing industry, which has grown immensely over the past decade. Currently, Bangladesh depends on imports from Japan, Korea and India as it doesn’t have a manufacturing base of its own.

However, the country is no stranger to Indian automobile brands. Tata Motors, for example, has a joint venture with Nitol Motors, through which it assembles and sells both commercial and passenger vehicles in Bangladesh. Additionally, both Ashok Leyland and Hero MotoCorp are setting up manufacturing units in the country, which is why the Dhaka Automotive Show could prove to be a great opportunity to connect with dealers and customers alike.
