Oshiwara's newest restaurant-lounge-sheesha-bar is an ode to the Disco era, with an overkill of blue, pink, green and yellow interiors. Not the best place for a quiet meal

Suddenly, the lane opposite Infiniti Mall has become a haven for resto-lounges, several of which fall into the seedy type category. Sadly, The Metro is no different. The moment we entered, we were escorted through a long corridor with Saawariya-esque blue lighting and flat shiny disco circles stuck on the walls. At the other end, a door led us to the restaurant, again done up in bright but dim hues and a slightly confused decor -- false ceiling, low faux leather couches and extremely small low tables that were made more for drinking sessions than eating. Because that's the sort of place The Metro is.

Besides, we aren't exactly their target audience; most of the crowd looked suspiciously B-rung-producer-types. On three occasions, we were asked if we'd prefer cocktails or mocktails. Being a sultry summer afternoon, we declined, all three times. So far, so shady. A quick detour to the ladies room revealed a secret opening in the fake wall -- a door leading up to the sheesha room, which, blinked continuously in red, blue, green and yellow. So far, so shadier. One of the cooler things at The Metro? They have a terrific projector screen that was airing one of the IPL matches. We felt a bit secure, a shade better.

The Metro's menu offers Italian, Indian and Chinese. The uninspiring list meant we checked with our attendant for suggestions. For starters, he recommended the Chilly Milly Chicken Kebab (Rs 275); we opted for Paneer Chilly (Rs 225). Typically, any dish with paneer is a precursor to the rest of the meal. Right? Wrong!

The Chilly Milly Kebab was all right; tender chunks of chicken in a mildly peppery gravy, though some of the chicken pieces tasted slightly burnt. The Paneer Chilly was a classic dish of paneer cubes bathed in a bloody red sauce. The paneer melted in the mouth while the sauce was spicy and intense. For the mains, we noticed that the Indian vegetarian section was dominated by kormas while the Chinese section was cliched with its tribute to Schezwan, noodles, rice and gravy.

Again, seeking our attendant's help we went with the Lahori Korma (Rs 245), Butter Rotis (Rs 25 each) and Mixed Prawns Pasta (Rs 450). Since we indecisive about opting for white or red sauce, we were served a mesh of both with prawns and spaghetti along with a portion of Garlic Bread (Rs 175, to be ordered separately).

The starters upped our expectations but the mains were a letdown. When the Lahori Korma arrived, we couldn't single out the flavours, just as we couldn't tell one distinct vegetable in the gravy. Later, our bill called it the Dehraduni Korma... so we still don't know what we were served. The Prawns Spaghetti had a smattering of cheese and white sauce but was mostly a watery red sauce affair. The prawns were succulentu00a0 while the spaghetti was well cooked; the red sauce was too watery and the thick strands of spaghetti couldn't take in much of its flavour. The portions were decent and we had to skip dessert. No cocktails and no dessert; clearly, we were the runt of the customers at The Metro.
