Wet-looking hair took centre-stage, once again, on the London Fashion Week catwalks

Use these tips to help you ace the wet-look hairstyle

Kim Kardashian's wet-look hairstyle

From Kim Kardashian to Bella Hadid to, more recently, designer Supriya Lele’s runway show at London Fashion Week, wet-looking hair has been a style staple for a while now. And, unlike painstaking blow-outs, it can be achieved much quicker and with a lot less effort, explains hair stylist Drishya Bhagyanath, while also sending a sophisticated air to your entire look. “However, this look requires at least a few products to achieve, depending on how perfect you’d like it to be,” she adds.

Acing the style

For straight hair, start by drying your hair until it is still a little damp. Don’t try to apply a product on hair that’s still dripping water as this might wash away the product. Next, apply sea salt spray to your lengths and work it in with your fingers. Scrunch your hair to create gentle waves. You can follow this up with a frizz-control product for a cleaner look. Follow with hair styling wax or gel. Run a generous amount of the product from the roots to the tips. If you have curly hair, you can start with blow-dried hair and apply wax or gel throughout your hair. Make sure to pick a product that is especially suited to curly hair. If you’re aiming for a beachy, wavy vibe, use wax; for more pronounced curls, use gel and define your curls by twisting small sections around your fingers. Pomade is another good option for both curly and straight hair, but can flatten curls. A smart way of wearing pomade is to apply it near the roots and stop midway, Bhagyanath explains. This, she clarifies, will retain some movement in your hair. Finally, lock in the style with hairspray.

Going product-free

If you aren’t very familiar with styling products and don’t mind a look that isn’t precise and immaculate, you could use any hair oil or serum in large amounts to create a wet look. “For a lot of people who’ve never used styling gels and waxes before, this is a more approachable technique and can be easily created with products they already own. The only difference is that the style will wear off a lot faster than it would have if they had used products with more hold,” Bhagyanath signs off.
