Fuelled by endless science-fiction content across formats, from feature films to novels, aliens have been a huge part of popular culture even if their existence is debated through eccentric conspiracy theories. Our fascination with extra-terrestrial objects and aliens isn’t limited to fiction as Unidentified Flying Object (UFO) sightings have been reported across the globe.

Among the most popular is the Roswell UFO incident that took place in 1947. Every year, spirited enthusiasts celebrate World UFO Day on July 2 to coincide with the highly speculative event. While the unexplained aerial phenomenon remains unproven, interest around the crash hasn’t died down, with hundreds of theories floating around. It comes as no surprise that every year we are treated to many alien-themed movies, TV shows, books, and video games. On World UFO Day, we have rounded up some of the best alien invasion games for you to check out.

Alien invasion

Arguably the most popular name on the list, the Halo franchise is also among the most successful sci-fi video games. Set in the 26th century, the central conflict in the original trilogy is an interstellar war fighting alien forces and protecting Earth from alien invasions. Developed by 343 Industries, the franchise’s latest instalment Halo 4 is available on Xbox 360, Xbox One, Microsoft Windows, and Xbox Series X/S. The iconic first-person shooter game remains to be a favourite among fans, and has spawned comics, merchandise, books, even a television series. If you are yet to experience the sci-fi genre of video games, Halo is where you start.

Space station survival

Developed by Arkane Studios for Xbox One, Playstation 4, and Microsoft Windows, Prey is an acclaimed first-person shooter video game set in an alternate timeline. The player controls the protagonist who is a part of major scientific mission studying different alien species aboard a space station. The objective is to navigate around the space station as aliens begin attacking the humans on the space station. With ample stealth and role playing elements, the game has multiple endings depending on player interaction with other humans and alien species.

Liberation from alien dictatorship

A sequel to the widely popular XCOM: Enemy Unknown, XCOM 2 is tactical role-playing video game which takes place twenty years after the events of its predecessor. The game requires players to control soldiers of a military organisation which has transformed into a resistance force against the established alien dictatorship known as the Advent. Developed by Firaxis Games for Microsoft Windows, OS X, Linux, Playstation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and iOS, the game has elements of role play and squad-based strategic combat making it ideal for anyone who loves fast-paced action.

Portable horror

A survival horror mobile game, Alien: Blackout follows protagonist Amanda Ripley post the events of Alien Isolation as she attempts to guide her crew through assigned missions while staying clear of the dangerous creature on board a damaged space station. The stylish visuals and rich storyline keep players hooked as they make split-second decisions. Developed by D3 Publisher for iOS and Android, this immersive fear-inducing game will adequately amuse fans of horror and science fiction genres.

Alien explorer

An action-adventure game that will take you to the centre of the solar system, Outer Wilds has players take up a seemingly impossible mission. Taking control of an alien space explorer, the player is in a solar system that is stuck in a 22-minute time loop that comes to an end as the sun goes supernova. Knowledge is gained every time the player repeats this cycle that will be helpful in future attempts. The single player game was developed by Mobius Digital for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Microsoft Windows.
