The city has got a new designer store and art gallery with the launch of Caravan Hands, a venture by Naziya Merchant, a solicitor by profession who is passionate about art.

Merchant explains about this unique venture, “The store provides offbeat creativity as a medium for expression. It is meant for people who are looking for products, which reflect a sense of uniqueness and individuality. It is an out-of-the-box space for people who look at creativity from a fresh perspective.”

The range of fair trade products aim to cater to everyone’s taste — from connoisseurs to aspiring aesthetes. While Merchant owned the Kemps Corner property for a while, she chose to launch the store only a few weeks ago. Interestingly, the brickwork in the store has been retained in its original English architectural form and design.

On offer at Caravan Hands are handpicked bags, necklaces, figurines, trays, coasters, and other knick-knacks apart from artworks. The products to be featured in the near future will include Madhubani and Gond artefacts, weaves from the Northern and remote Eastern states, pottery and artefacts made from Mother of Pearl.

The space is also open to people who wish to showcase their creativity. Coming up in August (August 8 to 16) is a poetry reading where original poetry along with artworks will be displayed by artist-poet Naima Imtiaz.
