With technology increasingly being used to voice opinions, address issues and reach out to people, a relatively newer form of journalism is emerging as a major force in the media industry.

Christened as citizen journalism, this form of journalism gives the reigns of the news space in the hands of the people and to talk about its scope and reach, Avid Learning and the US Consulate Mumbai has organised an event, Citizen Journalism: Where the West meets Mumbai.

The talk will see a discussion between Christine Tatum, President and CEO of Media Salad, and Shishir Joshi, CEO of Bombay First, drawing on examples from around the world.

“Nowadays, with the advancement of new media technology, mobile phones, etc, citizens collect,  report, analyse and distribute information, sometimes more quickly than traditional journalists. But along with the democratisation of the media, we wanted to explore the ethics and rules of citizen journalism that one should follow,” says Asad Lalljee, CEO of Avid Learning.

To make the discussion more relevant to Mumbaikars, Lalljee added that the speakers would juxtapose Western concepts of this form of journalism with concepts in Mumbai to understand the best media practices that the world gets from Mumbai and vice-versa.

The event is open for anyone above the age of 14.

On: Today, 6.30 pm to 8 pm
At: Studio X, Kitab Mahal, Fort.
