What is it that makes something cool? The event, titled That’s Mumbai Cool, by Piramal Art Foundation will explore this question in the context of cinema after a session on food. “We are constantly questioning what is cool. Whether it is what’s popular or what is underground. In the realm of cinema, it is not just alternative cinema now, but a much wider gamut,” says Ashvin Rajagopalan, director of Piramal Art Foundation.

He explains that like home chefs and innovative dining spaces are the new cool phenomenon in the world of food, in cinema it has to do with changing audience tastes, reviving of old movie theatres for a new cinema or the changing role of female characters. The choice of the panel for the talk was based on this thought.

“Paranav Ashar has been working with three dimensional cinema. Sridhar Rangayan runs the Kashish film festival in a country where homosexuality is still illegal. Tangella Madhavi is an independent filmmaker. All of them represent a sort of energy that characterises what is cool,” he says.
