Imagine potting pencils to grow veggies and herbs? This has been made possible, thanks to Jalebi, a brand of eco-friendly stationery launched earlier this month by city-based entrepreneur Renuka Shah. The brand sells Grow Me Plantable pencils (Rs 300 for a pack of 10), cards, bookmarks and notebooks (Rs 150-250) that can be recycled to grow plants.

The pencil, made from newspaper, comes attached with an activated seed bomb. Pot and watch it grow into any of the five vegetables — tomato, brinjal, celery, lettuce, chilli or even herbs like basil, chive and dill.

Likewise, its notebook covers, made from textile waste (hosiery material waste), come embedded with live seeds. Sow the cover, and watch marigold, tulsi and tomato plants grow right in front of you. Also request for customised books that will evolve into chilli, wildflower and onion plants.

Jalebi also sells coir pots, coco peat coins, waterproof notebooks, bags and boxes. Besides Mumbai, its products are available in offline stores in Pune, Chennai, Bengaluru and Thiruvanthapuram.
