Photographer Sreesailam Pasupula has had quite an adventurous journey in the last six years, including surviving a fall from a 200-ft high hill in a way akin to a scene from a Bollywood film.

Though, still recuperating from internal injuries, the photographer is all set with his first solo show at the Jehangir Art Gallery. Titled Impressions, the exhibition showcases around 37 images in five different categories, namely travel, portraits, fine art, faith and street stories from across the country.

“This show is like a travelogue, each picture telling a story or an incident, or a place that remains ingrained in my mind,” says the photographer. A nomad by nature and in spirit, Pasupula spends most of his time travelling across the country, exploring new cities, villages and states, and sometimes going back to the same ones, year after year. It’s how all pictures in the Faith series were born, during his journeys to religious places like Mathura, Varanasi and Vrindavan. “Faith takes a different role in different places, among different people, and is exhibited differently. This series capture that variety of faith in India,” he elaborates.

The exhibition offers a mix of colour and black and white photographs, each serving a different purpose. “The black and white photographs have been retained to essentially focus more on the emotion that they portray, while the colour images focus more on the surrounding beauty,” informs the photographer, who is originally from Hyderabad, but is now based in Mumbai.

Winner of the Lonely Planet Grand Prize 2010, Pasupula’s works have found their way to numerous galleries and exhibitions across the world, largely through international competitions that he enters throughout the year.

And, when not taking part in competitions, he either works as a commercial photographer or travels across the country. “I spend most of my time travelling, from one place to another.

I like it as it gives me the opportunity to experience new things and capture new places,” says the photographer.
