Chuckle over the lighter side of politics

What: With election fever gripping the nation, enjoy some comic relief with Satish Acharya’s just released, self-published book of comic strips. Titled Mein, Hum & AAP!, it features cartoons that take you through the history of parties such as the Congress, BJP and the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), among others.

Satish Acharya, cartoonist

Through the sketches, one gets an idea of the controversies that have dogged major parties over the years, and the foot-in-mouth comments made by foolhardy politicians. Acharya explains that it was the Congress party’s slogan 'Mein nahi Hum' and the new party, AAP, that inspired him to come up with the title for the book.

Arvind Kejriwal’s dharna protest becomes a huge talking point

How: Acharya conceived the book with cartoons on politicians such as Narendra Modi, Rahul Gandhi and Arvind Kejriwal. The cartoons were a part of Acharya’s portfolio over the last few years. “Though I had loads of cartoons on these people, the tedious part was selecting the cartoons, designing the pages, co-ordinating the printing and now, selling the books,” laughs Acharya. The cartoonist admits that he has tried to strike a balance while picking cartoons and has not been biased towards any leader. “I have also tried to trace each leader’s political journey leading to the elections. This book will remind voters of yesterday, and the day before yesterday, too,” he states.

Rahul Gandhi’s recent interview with TV journalist Arnab Goswami opened the old wound of 1984 riots

Where: While his cartoons poke fun at political shenanigans, Acharya remains unfazed by the possible whiplash. “In this social media age, anything or everything can become a controversy and no controversy lives beyond a few thousand tweets or a few days. If a particular cartoon bothers somebody, then it means that the cartoon is working fine. I try my best to stay within my Laxman rekha and avoid anything which will waste my time!” he concludes.
