Shojin Ryori, a vegetarian Japanese cooking technique

Whether it's the sushi or Ramen noodle soup popularised by Japanese anime characters like Naruto, for most Indians, Japanese cuisine remains synonymous with meat. However, not many may be aware that Japanese cuisine also features Shojin Ryori, a unique vegetarian cooking method that was introduced in the country, along with Buddhism, in the 6th century.

The unique cooking method will be introduced to Mumbaikars this weekend at Cool Japan Festival. Chef Komaki from Japan will be coming to the city to prepare this cuisine, especially for the festival. Other gastronomical delights at the venue include Japanese bento boxes (lunch boxes), Dorayaki (a Japanese sweet), Donburi (a rice bowl dish) and of course, sushi.

The two-day weekend festival will also have Japanese musicians, artists and dancers who will introduce the crowds to unique cultural aspects of the Land of the Rising Sun. Some of the top attractions include live performances by Japanese Pop diva Erina Matsui, and Spice Madams, a Japanese troupe based in Mumbai that dances to Bollywood tunes.

There will also be live demos of Japanese martial arts, Kendo and Karate as well an act on Taiko, a Japanese musical instrument played in festivals and religious rituals, by The Delhi Wadaiko team.
