Shubhangi Atre popularly known as Angoori Bhabi from &TV's Bhabi Ji Ghar Par Hai! tells mid-day.com about what’s in store this Diwali.
What are your Diwali plans this year?
It is all about family and friends. We will be decorating our house with beautiful and colourful diyas and lights along with rangoli. In addition to it, we will be hosting a small get together with friends. We intend to drive around to check out Diwali lighting across the city, and it is so much fun to watch. Besides that, I will follow my personal Diwali ritual of making at least five different mithais like I do every year.
Your favourite childhood memories of Diwali...
What I loved the most about the festival of lights was lighting the diyas and making rangolis. It used to be full-fledged competition in the neighbourhood. We did not have YouTube for tutorials during those days, and we would practise the design on paper and then get our hands on the final design.
It used to be so much fun. The whole week we would meet and greet each other and exchange sweets and dry fruits.

What are the Diwali traditions at your home?
Apart from traditional puja and décor, we always make it a point to buy diyas and candles from local artisans. This handmade diyas and candles not only make our homes beautiful and delightful but also lights up the homes of small-scale businesses. Exchanging gifts and spreading joy is the essence of Diwali. People flock around local markets and malls to purchase handicrafts, home decor, and a variety of other gifts. We must support small artisans as we have so many diverse and indigenous crafts with many options. So, we make it a point to buy local handicrafts from local artisans every year during festivities.
What are the sweets you love gorging on during Diwali?
I have a sweet tooth! So, I cannot pinpoint one particular sweet but a whole lot of them. My favourites include Kaju-badam barfi and of course Gulab Jamun and Rasmalai… the list is endless.
Any favourite Diwali song or scene from a movie?
I love the "Pairon mein bandhan hai" song from Mohabbatein. It has a very different vibe to it and I love grooving on that song.
What's your favourite part of the festival?
I love how everything looks so clean and even at night, there is no darkness. Every house is lit up with lights and diyas, making every colony look like a paradise. Diwali conveys that we humans are meant to bring light to the environment and keep it safe for the future to enjoy it.
