Today is the death anniversary of Indira Gandhi, one of the most iconic and dynamic leaders which India has ever seen. Mid-Day Online spoke to actress Saumya Tandon, who looks up to the lady and has been extremely influenced by her life.

What’s the most striking personality trait of Indira Gandhi that you remember the most?
As a kid, I read about her in history books and my father also spoke about her quite often. I am always in awe of ‘The Iron Lady Of India’ and the only lady Prime Minister we have had. Though, as a kid, I did not understand any political decisions or policies of hers, I was always idolizing and reading about her. Her tenacity was what my father used to talk about and tell me that having a purpose in life will make   your living meaningful. I was taught to live with a dream and purpose, and was given examples of the likes of Indira ji. She has been a huge part of my growing up years. She has inspired so many young women like me to live with strength and fight for your dreams.

The one quote of hers that you live by?
Well… I have read about her, but can’t honestly say I live by any quote of hers. I do remember reading one quote which has stayed with me forever. It is “I am not a person to be pressured – by anybody or any nation.”. This quote showed how fearless and strong she was in her thoughts and will power.

In what way has she influenced/ touched your life?
Like I told earlier, she has been an inspiration to many women like me especially in our growing years. She lived for her dream and did everything to achieve it with tenacity.

Do you remember the iconic question that she had asked the cosmonaut Rakesh Sharma?
Of course, who doesn’t! We grew up reading it. Indira ji had asked Rakesh Sharma ji, “Upar se Bharat kaisa dikhta hai?”. To which, the latter’s memorable response was “Saare Jahan Se Accha”!

Have you read any books on her? If yes, do you remember any incident about her life that had an extremely deep impact in your life.
I remember reading the book by Shri Jawaharlal Nehru, which was gifted by my father. The book was ‘Letters From A Father To His Daughter’. These were collection of 30 letters written by Nehru ji to Indira ji when she was 10 years old. My father had gifted this book to me when I was 10 years old. So, it serves as a precious memory in my life.
