The 'Mad Max' series includes: 'Mad Max' (1979), 'Mad Max 2' (1981), 'Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome' (1985), 'Mad Max: Fury Road' (2015), and the upcoming 'Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga' (2024), which hits theatres on May 24.
What is the series about?
The whole series has been praised by critics since the first movie came out in 1979, with 'Mad Max 2' and 'Fury Road' often considered some of the best action films ever made. In 2016, 'Fury Road' became the first movie in the 'Mad Max' series to win Academy Awards, taking home six out of ten nominations.
In the prequel, Anya Taylor-Joy steps into the role of Furiosa, previously played by Charlize Theron. The story follows Furiosa as she is kidnapped as a child by the Warlord Dementus (played by Chris Hemsworth) and his Biker Horde. She seeks revenge and aims to reunite with her family and return to her homeland.
While creating Fury Road in 2015, Miller had already developed Furiosa’s backstory, revealing significant details about her life before the events of that film.
Furiosa was kidnapped as a child from a secret, matriarchal oasis called the Green Place of the Many Mothers, home to a tribe of women known as the Vuvalini. Her mother died three days after the abduction, and Furiosa spent the next 15 years fighting to survive and return home. During this time, she lost most of her left arm and replaced it with a makeshift claw prosthetic.
In Fury Road, Furiosa tries to escape to the Green Place with Immortan Joe's wives, only to discover that the land had become barren and most of the Vuvalini were dead. Furiosa and her group then fought their way back to the Citadel, killed Immortan Joe, and began a new era in the Wasteland.
