According to The Hollywood Reporter, the feature film will revolve around on a by-the-book and very serious lifeguard (Johnson) who is forced to team up with a young rule-flouting hothead (Zac Efron) in order to save their beach from environmental destruction at the hands of an oil tycoon.
"Welcoming my dude @ZacEfron to #BAYWATCH. Our movie will be big, fun and RATED R.. Like me when I drink," Johnson tweeted.
The film is based on a classic TV series of the same name. The original beach lifeguard series starred David Hasselhoff and Pamela Anderson. It's unclear if any of them will appear in the big-screen version.
Efron, 27, was last seen in R-rated comedy 'Neighbors' and is expected to return for the sequel. He will next star in 'We Are Your Friends', 'Dirty Grandpa', and 'Mike and Dave Need Wedding Dates'.
